Market Cross and Selby town centre set to dazzle with Christmas lights switch-on and live entertainment

Market Cross and Selby town centre is set to dazzle with a full programme of live entertainment and activities for the official Christmas lights switch-on.

A large crowd is expected to enjoy a full day of festive fun on Saturday, November 30, between 10am and 5pm.

Market Cross will be hosting free face painting and glitter tattoos from Noon-3pm, plus there will be live music from Sarah Stones from Noon-3pm.     

The Market Place will also be hosting a full programme of entertainment in the lead up to the big switch on.

There will be a stage set up in Market Place with live music and performances between 10am and 4pm.  

York Mix Radio will then commence the countdown from around 3.50pm to the big switch on at 4pm.

Claire Coupland will then take to the stage to perform under the sparkle of the Christmas lights.

In addition, there will be more than 40 stalls to browse through in the markets area selling everything from mulled wine and hot apple cider to hog roasts and Yorkshire pudding wraps, plus   

Special gifts including body scrubs, clothing, wax melts, wreaths, games, toys, plus much more.

There will also be dancing turkeys, donkey rides, reindeer food making and a visit from Father Christmas himself.

Melissa Clement, Events and Marketing Co-ordinator for Market Cross, said: “This promises to be a fantastic day out that will get everyone into the festive spirit.

“With face painting, live music, shopping, food, drink and a whole host of fun activities there really will be something for everyone.” 

Emma Rogers, Market/Events Manager for Christmas lights switch-on organisers Selby Town Council, said: “We are so excited for our Christmas market; it’s always such a lovely atmosphere and we have a lot of new stalls with us this year.

“The market is a cherished tradition that has been running for over 12 years, it is a magical event that gets bigger every year and brings thousands of people throughout the day into the town centre, we are excited to offer families a festive experience filled with fun activities to enjoy, getting everyone in the Christmas spirit.” 

The day out also serves as a perfect opportunity to check out the wide range of shops and hospitality venues at Market Cross shopping centre.

The centre is anchored by Home Bargains and other retailers include Holland and Barrett, The Works, Savers, plus food and drink spots including Costa Coffee and Barco Lounge.

Market Cross is also home to a number of excellent independent businesses including The Selby Butchers and Cooper's Greengrocer.
